1553: Lady Jane Grey was proclaimed Queen of England; her reign only last nine days before she was replaced by Mary I.

1984: a large fire, caused by lightning, destroyed large parts of York Minster; the restoration took four years and cost £2 million; “Blue Peter” viewers helped design some of the new ceiling bosses.
