1567: Mary, Queen of Scots, who had been imprisoned for two years, was forced to pass on the monarchy to her son, King James VI.

1911: Machu Picchu, an ancient Inca settlement high in the mountains of Peru, was discovered.

1925: Six-year old Patricia Cheeseman became the first person to be successfully treated for diabetes with insulin.
