On this day in history

1545: Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose, sank in the Solent. It was salvaged in 1982.

1588: The Spanish Armada was first sighted from England, off the Lizard in Cornwall.

1799: The Rosetta Stone was found in Egypt. The Stone dates to 196 BC, and was found by Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army. The Stone allowed Egyptian hieroglyphs to be translated for the first time. The Stone is now on display in the British Museum.

1900: The Paris underground system, the Metro, opened.
